The Gospel without words…

I am reminded as I begin this post that I have had a privileged background in the education of my Spirit, whether or not I have always taken advantage of it or appreciated it. It began with 8 years at a parochial school in Chicago. It continued with 4 years at an all girls high school run by the Franciscan Sisters of Blessed Kunegunda. As a young adult I spent several years at a Bible Church on the campus of Wheaton College where I learned more Scripture than any time before or since. Later I graduated from seminary and later still earned a Doctor of Ministry degree. Believe me–many words that have brought me thus far.

But more recently, I’ve come to read, to listen to, to observe, and understand the Gospel that is in clear sight, and available to all. The Gospel that is in creation: in the elements, in flora and fauna, in flying, buzzing, creeping things, in stars and planets, sun and moon, in the sound of the surf, and in the movement of the wind. I see it lived out creatures who sleep under the stars and wake to morning light. Things that without uttering one word, speak of who God is, and teach me how I might live–if/when I listen.

For the past 5 years, by simply sliding open the darkening curtain in my room, the photo above is the first thing I see. The shadows falling on the seawall are cast by the houses on my street. The one, on the far right is the roof line of our house. Each morning is different, new, fresh. No two mornings look alike. The strength of the sun determines the colors. The wind determines the speed of the clouds. At least twice a year, for several weeks in spring and fall, the moon is still setting over the pine trees when the sun is rising. Not every morning is the lake a reflecting pond, but on this day it was. When the painted turtles hear the sliding door, they come over for breakfast.

Other than being peaceful and beautiful, it is also the Story of God’s twin gifts of sacrifice and renewal… The Gospel without words. The seawall you see was raised almost 2 feet in 2024. On the other side of it is a marsh that leads to the Florida Intracoastal Waterway. When a hurricane skims the east coast of Florida, millions of gallons of water pour into our little lake(s) because of sea rise/global warming. But 5 days before a storm (we always have notice for a hurricane) our community begins to pump out 2.4 million gallons of water daily from our lakes to make room for what the storm will bring back in. On about the 2nd day of the pumping, tops of trees start to appear in the middle of the lake where they have been sacrificed for the purpose of mitigation. The trees that needed to be felled for the lake are a metaphor for me, of Christ’s sacrifice for the good of many. And on days like the one in the picture, I am simply in awe of it all.

What is it you see being renewed through sacrifice in the natural world? On a path we regularly walk there is a tree that has been scarred by damage. To save the tree, the limb was cut off, sacrificed. And into that hole almost the full diameter of where the limb was, the wind has carried dirt, and finally some spores that would develop into a plant. Because it is recessed, the rain seeps down into it from the leaves several feet overhead. And the young plant is protected from winds that might damage them. The scar has become a womb for new life. It’s not only an image of sacrifice and renewal, but of redemption and of hope.

I could go on and on about seeing, understanding, and the deepening of my faith that occurs daily without any more words needing to be read or spoken. My response is always one of gratitude for how freely and lavishly God makes love, mercy and hope known to anyone, anywhere, when we are ready.

May you be blessed today by the ordinary things you see around you. May you be called to consider in them what God is lovingly speaking to you. And may you share the joy with which it fills you, with those around you.

With much love,

Kathleen

STOP.APPRECIATE.THANK.SHARE

Golden surf at sunrise August 21, 2022

It’s Sunday morning and Sam and I participated in our sacred ritual. We rose while it was still dark. We dressed for the occasion. We brought along what was required. We partook of what was offered. And we returned home refreshed in body, mind and spirit.

For most of our lives, this ritual was experienced in a building, with lots of people, with traditions, and language, and texts centuries in the making. For almost 30 of those years, I led the ritual with all that I had to offer and a lot of help. But with the beginning of the pandemic, that fell apart. First, my leadership was moved from in-person to on-line. Then life intervened and I simply no longer had a ritual to lead. Not only that, with my autoimmune disease, I am not engaging people in groups of any size indoors. So many changes. Yet, change does not necessarily equal loss.

I’ve summed up our new worship ritual with the four simple words above. Stop. Appreciate. Thank. And Share. We stop what might be our usual daily practice and make our way out into creation. We appreciate, mostly in silence what we find around us. We take it in–and let it wash over us. I often appreciate by not only noticing but capturing in photos. As we take our leave, there’s more silence…grateful silence, thankful silence, worshipful silence. And the important final step, sharing. A disciple not only sees, learns and follows… but shares. My practice of sending a photo to someone is not only prayer, but a sharing of the goodnes, bounty, mercy and love of God.

Man and Best Friend August 21, 2022

There is so much inspiration that is a part of this worship ritual. No hymns, but waves, and birds, and children laughing. I don’t know anyone’s name, but most strangers up at 6:30 a.m. greet one another with a smile and a word as we pass. All around are examples of love, of faithfulness, of beauty, of goodness, of joy. A guy and his dog run north. A dad has brought his young son to fish. Couples sit cross-legged side by side in silence, waiting. A whole family is on their blanket. No one has organized us, but at the moment the sun slips up from the horizon, or comes out from the distant bank of clouds, everyone stops–awe abounds.

Just like I don’t know if/when I’ll ever go back into a retail store, or get on an airplane, I don’t know if/when I will ever be part of a traditional worshiping community. But I do realize, finally, that it’s not about the building, or like-minded people–or even about the rituals and traditions that once sustained me. I realize that I have been graced with all I need to love God, self and neighbor. And just this morning in my appreciative silence, I suddenly hoped that at sometime across my ministry year, I said that, conveyed that, to those before me.

It doesn’t have to be Sunday to STOP. APPRECIATE. THANK. & SHARE. You don’t need to live next to the Atlantic. You don’t even need to love pre-dawn. Just see with your heart. Behold it Trust it. Be grateful. And Share. It’s really that simple.

Sola Deo gloria (Glory to God Alone)

Creation Signals Transformation

Fall landscape with pastel skies 2021

We moved to southwest Florida just shy of 20 years ago where I quickly became acclimated to experiencing One season…summer. Yes, there were a few cool days. Yes there was learning to live in a place with a ‘hurricane season’ and a ‘rainy season’ but in all truth a day in January, April and July were separated by only a few degrees. We settled in. We adapted. Sam cut the grass 12 months out of the year. Until now.

When we lived in Illinois and Indiana, Autumn was always my favorite season. I loved the smell of burning leaves, the colors of gold, auburgine, pumpkin and scarlet. I loved crisp apples at the outdoor market alongside the clusters of Indian corn, tied-up hay bails, wheat shafts to decorate the light posts, and all things signaling fall. It was, as all changes of seasons are, a sign of transformation. The creation shouting that something was afoot!

During the past 20 years, I did my best to create what I most loved, in a place for which such things were foreign. My good friends from up north would send me colored leaves which I’d carefully place on the runner on the dining room table. I’d get a nice spicy candle that smelled like apples or pumpkin to burn each early evening. I searched my wardrobe for clothes in the colors of Autumn…and dared to wear corduroy pants while it was still 80 degrees… and be hopelessly out of context. Until now.

We lived in Lehigh, Naples and Sarasota in those years, tropical and subtropical weather. Who knew that moving 200 miles north would bring so much change? This morning I woke up to a crisp 55 degrees and the high will be 70. The skies are blue, the sun shining, the breeze is out of the west pushing back the breeze off the Atlantic. Out my window even the birds are changing, some don’t stay for the winter, and others from the north are just arriving. Leaves are falling everywhere, and while there are not all the colors of maple and oaks that I remember, the bright green marsh grasses are beginning to turn copper. Creation is once again signaling transformation.

I tend to wonder, ponder, think and write a lot about both creation and transformation. Creation is the subject of most all of my photography. And the wide open invitation to transformation is at the heart of my theology and likely my original call to ministry. I am aware at this moment in time of the unbidden and gracious gift of the place I find myself today, where I “live and move and have my being.” Once again (and likely still) creation is speaking to me of transformation. And I am humbled, and I am grateful.

It’s important for me to put together, to write down my awareness of this important spiritual thread of creation/transformation and it’s guidance, teaching and the sacred metaphors it provides in my life. As I sit here it has been 20 months since I’ve walked into a church. My disciplines and spiritual practices have all changed dramatically. When I try to make sense of, or to articulate the spiritual transformation that has/is occuring, words that come to mind are embodied, creationist, universal, or to borrow a word from the mystics, “one-ing.” My spiritual director this week graciously gave me the word mystical to describe the path on which I am walking as I tend to my spirit in this time. It is a path where the gap between ‘sacred and profane’ has all but closed…every- thing sacred…because everything is of God. “And he said: Let us make humankind to our image and likeness. …. And God created humans to his own image: to the image of God he created him: male and female he created them.” —Genesis 1:26-27

Our transformation, yours and mine, is not a matter of becoming anything other than what we already are: created in God’s image. We are not seeking perfection, as we are already perfect as God is perfect.. The transformation open and waiting for us is simply our consent to likeness. To becoming like God whose image we already bear. The metaphor I see out my window, as the seasons change, is that the white pines, the scrub trees, and the grasses are not trying to become other than what they already are. They are simply transforming as a part of their life cycle…shedding what they no longer need…gaining strength by preserving in a season of want…storing and building in a season of plenty. Indeed. Creation signals to us what transformation looks like. Becoming. Always becoming. No books, diagrams, or “3-steps to perfection” needed. Just awareness.

I am grateful for the richness of creation and the diversity that I am experiencing as if for the first time. I am grateful for the wonder that wells up in me as wind, and temperatures, and foliage and flying things and creeping things speak to me of things divine. I am especially grateful for those who have gone before me and those who walk with me who also see/experience/welcome the transformation that creation speaks. Holy Autumn to you friends. Holy Autumn.
